I remember my friend Joyce....

pinkribbon100.jpg (8876 bytes)We were friends through out our school years; some years as best friends, other times just passing "hellos" in a crowded high school hallway. I remember her mother even more. There aren’t many times I hear breast cancer and not think of her. Flo was the kind of mom I always wanted to have. She was easy. Easy to talk with, easy to offer advice, and easy to laugh. Every day was an event with Flo. Birthdays and holidays were filled with brightly wrapped gifts, favorite foods, and a house filled with warmth and love. She never stopped. I remember her laugh; her smile.

Now I remember all the things that could have been done to prevent her breast cancer. I think: what if women back then talked about breast self exam and breast cancer? What if mammograms were something ordinary, instead of a test that meant you had certain death?

Every October and every week
I remember not to forget Flo.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The American Cancer Society (ACS) hosts this event every year. This is a good time to get caught up on the latest breast health news. It is also a good idea to schedule a mammogram. The ACS guidelines for mammograms include mammograms for all women at the age of thirty-five, then again at forty. Mammograms should be performed every year after forty, unless otherwise specified by a doctor. Monthly Breast Self Exam (BSE) is another crucial step for breast health. It is easy to do and has saved many women’s lives.

It means that YOU can help yourself.
Breast cancer statistics leave us breathless. It’s estimated one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This is very scary. This doesn’t mean they will die, in fact it tells a pretty good story. It tells us more and more women are detecting their breast cancer at earlier stages. The survival rate for women with breast cancer is much higher today than a decade ago. With early detection and treatment, over ninety percent of women with breast cancer will live beyond five years after their diagnosis. This was not the case a decade ago. Breast cancer was a certain death sentence back in the seventies and early eighties. Credit for this rise in successful treatment goes to early detection. Finding the disease early gets a woman into treatment earlier. This stops the cancer from spreading. Early detection equals early treatment. Monthly breast self exams have saved thousands of lives.

What is Breast self exam (BSE)?
Breast self exam is simple. It includes looking at your breasts in the mirror and noticing any changes in color, or texture of the skin. Breast self exam involves gently pressing on your breasts. Some women feel uncomfortable touching their own breasts. If you ask your neighbor if she checks out her breasts she’ll blush and probably giggle. Yet, this is a very simple and powerful tool. BSE is easily incorporated with a shower or in the evening before bedtime. It takes less than ten minutes and the more you do it the more you will "know" your breasts. This is very important if in the future something does change you will notice it right away and see your doctor.

How do you do it?
