Warm weather heralds the arrival of swimsuits, plenty
of sun, and fun parties.
If you're throwing a swank soiree, either formal or casual, you'll need a great setting,
your best buds, and tasty dishes to serve. The food at your fabulous fete will either have
your guests' asking for second helpings or will leave a bad taste in their mouths. Even if
you're an amateur cook and feel overwhelmed by complicated recipe instructions, you can
still make delicious food. Nigella Lawson is the author of the cookbook, "Forever
Summer," a guide to making fun summer food. This influential,
critically-acclaimed British food writer and television host of "Nigella Bites"
has gained international acclaim for her easygoing, joyful attitude to cooking and baking.
She sums up her approach to culinary matters as "minimum effort for maximum
pleasure."
"I am not a chef," Lawson states. "I am not even a
trained or professional cook. My qualification is as an eater." Indeed, she doesn't
have professional culinary training, which she makes up for with a genuine love for making
and eating delicious dishes. This more sensual approach to cooking is what makes Lawson a
contemporary culinary role model. Her passion for cooking and food began at home, where
"part of the pleasure of food in our house was the thinking about it and the talking
about it," says Lawson's younger sister Horatia. Horatia also recalls how " as a
teenager I'd come in from a late night and find my mother making mayonnaise in her nightie
at three in the morning. She found it very soothing."
Lawson's love for food influenced her working life. She
started her restaurant column in "The Spectator" and later wrote a food column
for "Vogue" magazine. Her first book, "How to Eat: The Pleasures and
Principles of Good Food," was published to critical acclaim in 1998. She won a wide
and dedicated audience with her relaxed attitude to food and eating.
In
addition, "How to Eat" was the basis for her successful show, "Nigella
Bites," which airs on the Style Network and E! entertainment. On
her series, she delights in preparing, dicing, and taste-testing the foods she creates.
She whips up great, fresh dishes, including fried candy bars! These decadent, easy-to-make
treats are guaranteed to make your mouth water. In addition, "How
to be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking,"
published in 2000, was a best-selling book and introduced a whole new generation to the
art of baking.
Her
latest cookbook, "Forever
Summer," strives to prolong that "lazy, warm summer
feeling" throughout the cold, dark winter months. Some of the summery recipes include
butterflied chicken with lemon and rosemary, Summer Crumble, and Blonde Mocha Layer Cake.
It also includes Spanish and Italian
dishes. The companion to her new book, "Forever Summer with Nigella," is
airing on the Style network and E! entertainment television.
The carefree flair Lawson brings to cooking and eating will
inspire your own parties and enjoyment for food and cooking. Along with her culinary
suggestions, it's important to follow your own heart. Cooking and eating are essential
aspects of your life, a way of experimenting with new recipes and discovering what foods
you like or dislike.
In addition, throwing a party is an opportunity to
express and share your personality and unique style with friends and family. Before you
make the guest list, ask yourself three questions: What kinds of foods do I relish and
think my guests would also enjoy eating? What kind of people and places make me feel
comfortable? If I was going to someone else's party, what would I want it to be like?
Discovering what gives you joy will make your get-togethers delectably warm and fun all
year round.
