Creative Writing GroupMy Little Bookshelf
by Joanne Spataro
In my room, there is a little
bookshelf three cases high,
With all things near and dear to me on its tops and bottoms
It's chipped cherrywood only adds to it's grace and charm
And I cherish it's presence in my study
When I walk into my workspace, there is no need for alarm
Because of it's warm finish and understated beauty
In my room, there is a little bookshelf three cases high,
With all things near and dear to me on its tops and bottoms
With a picture of my mother-
My friend and direction-
Because I love her
And willingly allow her into my collection
Of fragile statuettes from past trips
That brings me back to that special place
Where I can only express a grin on my lips
The molds and curves perfect without sparkles or laces
With their carved features and dignity
I begin to look on their eloquent faces
And the feeling of growing affinity
Washes over my body
In my room, there is a little bookshelf three
cases high,
With all things near and dear to me on its tops and bottoms
When I cherish this divine emotion-
One I work at each day-
Is my family devotion
Because if I may-
My family soothes and inspires me like a rich lotion-
They are in this sweet bookshelf
I know that I am not a single dove
But come from a caring brood
Because I am someone who is loved, who is in love
With life and it's possibilities and delicious food-
In my room, there is a little bookshelf three cases high,
With all things near and dear to me on its tops and bottoms
I realize that this fine bookshelf once belonged to another child
He is my father- a very strong man now
But once was an innocent little boy gentle and mild
Who put his astronomy, science, and coloring books as high as his growth
would allow-
In the corner of the shelf is a beanbag Basset hound
Reminding me of my own slobbery dog-
The more I look at the stuffed creature, I found-
The girl who's in a Basset hound fog
My lovely sister who always manages to cheer me up
In my room, there is a little bookshelf three cases high,
With all things near and dear to me on its tops and bottoms
and I love it
