How does cranberry juice help thousands of women prevent urinary tract infections?

tgturkey.gif (3704 bytes)Drinking cranberry juice regularly can help prevent urinary tract infections. The question has been what ingredient in the juice performs this job? The secret is concentrated tannins in the juice also known as proanthocyanidins.

Scientists from Rutgers University in New Jersy conducted experiments to understand exactly what in cranberry juice does this. The study was published as a letter in this month's New England Journal of Medicine.

The test tube studies discovered the concentrated tannins from cranberry juice prevent E. coli bacteria, the main cause in urinary tract infections, from attaching itself to the cells that line the urinary tract.

Blueberries were also found to contain these tannins.

Yes, this article is absolutley correct.
I just want to mention something I read about urinary tract infections. Some women are allergic to the sanitary pads called "Always". They manifest their allergies through urinary tract infections. I am proof of this. I never had any problems before I started using those pads. Once I read the article I immediately stopped using that brand name of pads & have never had any problems again.
