pinkribbon100.jpg (8876 bytes)In JAMA Vol. 281, pp. 2091-2097, June 9, 1999, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a study supporting that taking hormones after menopause does not increase the risk of breast cancer, except for some uncommon forms of the disease that are slow growing and highly treatable

Benefits Outweigh Risks
Researchers said the findings add to evidence that the benefits of hormone supplements outweigh any increased risk of breast cancer. Millions of women take hormones to ease the effects of menopause such as hot flashes.  The hormones are also known to reduce the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and possibly mental decline like Alzheimer's disease.

Previous studies have indicated that women who take hormones- specifically estrogen- after menopause are more likely to develop breast cancer.  Other studies have found no link.

The Iowa study
was the first hormone study to categorize case of breast cancer as slow growing or fast growing.

When a woman weights the risk of breast cancer versus the benefit of possibly reducing cardiovascular disease and reducing the risk of osteoporosis, this provides further evidence for the benefit," says Dr. Susan Gapstar, a cancer epidemiologist who led the study.

This study involved over 37,000 women between the ages of 55 to 69.  The study called the Iowa Women's health Study continued over 11 years and ended in 1996.
