FemHRT is a new
estrogen/progesterone product made by the pharmaceutical company Parke Davis. It is
a form of HRT, hormone replacement therapy,
especially made for and only for women who are in menopause,
post menopausal, and have an intact uterus (hysterectomy patients cannot use this
product). This is not a product for women experiencing perimenopause. FemHRT contains both an estrogen and a form of progesterone.
The estrogen is ethinyl estradiol and the progesterone is norethindrone acetate.
Each pill contains both estrogen and progesterone and is taken on a continuous
basis. There is 1 milligram of norethindrone acetate and 5 micrograms of ethinyl
estradiol in each pill.
Women who use FemHRT will not have a period but can
experience spotting when using this product at first. Spotting should stop on its
own as a woman's body adjusts to FemHRT.
FemHRT
is prescribed for women who are in menopause and/or have finished menopause and are
experiencing moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms- hot
flashes, night sweats, heart racing/palpitations
all related to menopause and beyond. FemHRT is also designed to prevent osteoporosis or "brittle
bone" disease.
Ruth Jacobowitz, in her book "The
Estrogen Answer Book", does a good job explaining all the various
types of hormone replacement therapy, including the available individual estrogen and
progesterone products. (see the interview with
Jacobowitz)

Sleep disturbances and perimenopause
Sleeping disturbances are extraordinarily common during perimenopause. Studies
have shown that women over the age of forty have more sleep troubles than their younger
counterparts. Look at the television commercial for sleeping aides. They are geared
towards women who are thirty five years old and beyond.
