Dr. Steven Goldstein, a noted author of the two very popular books The Estrogen Alternative and Could It Be... Perimenopause?  answers the following questions from our HotFlash! support group members.

Dr. Goldstein practices obstetrics and gynecology in New York City and also is a professor at NYU.   He's an expert in ultrasonography and has published many papers on his research.  In addition to being a staunch supporter of women's health, he frequently gives lectures and seminars to doctors about the latest in women's health.

Question: Right now I'm in perimenopause and I have been having frequent, strong, heart palpitations.  They drive me crazy.  My doctor wants me to take Prempro and insists this will help me.


Dr. Goldstein:
"Prempro is inappropriate for perimenopause.  It does not suppress the estrogen you are still making.  I recommend LoEstrin 1/20." (see "suppressive" Rx)
