 Eva:
Id like to welcome Sondra Clark to our "Meet the
Author" series. She has been doing arts and crafts projects for over
half her life. She wrote the book when she was only eight years old and is our first kid
author in our series. When she is not busy with crafts, Sondra performs monologues, rides
horses and does cartwheels throughout her house. She lives in Bellingham, Washington. This is a great book for kids
because the directions are not complicated and you can add your own creative
touches. I had the opportunity to ask Sondra a few questions and we are featuring one of
her crafts from the book, "Quilted Boxes."
Eva:
Welcome to our website, Sondra.
How did you get a book published when you were only eight years old at the time?
Sondra:
My mom has written several books. One day I said, "Mom, I want to write a
book too." She said I could as long as I wrote about something I knew about. I knew
about crafts! A publisher was going to print it, but said it would be one and a half years
till it came out. I didnt want to wait that long, so we self-published the book.
Then when it came out, Meadowbrook Press saw it, liked it and bought the rights. My second
book, Wearable Art With Sondra comes out in September with Prima Publishing. Its
been funning flying around the country to promote the book. Ive been on the Donny
and Marie Show, 700 Club and Crook and Chase. Plus I speak to school assemblies and show
kids how they can do things if they work hard.
Eva:
What inspired you to write a book on crafts?
Sondra:
We dont watch much TV, so I had a lot of time for craft projects. We have an entire
craft room filled with paints, glitter, foam, pipe cleaners, etc. My Dad even sits down
and makes fun stuff with me. Ive been using glue guns since I was four! Plus my
parents dont mind if I make a mess and spill glitter or glue. I like being creative.
I usually make all my own gifts and cards.
Eva:
How long did it take you to write this wonderful book?
Sondra:
I wrote the first book in about 6 weeks. During my Christmas break when I was 8, I set a
goal of doing 2 crafts a day. At the end of my vacation, I had 24 projects done. Then I
did one craft a day until I got to 55. It was hard work, but writing up one page a day was
a goal I could reach. My second book took about the same time. I wrote it over my
Christmas break when I was 9 .
