A Bug’s Life is a fun fantasy story about the kindly ants against the evil grasshoppers. The story’s central character is Flick (voiced by Dave Foley), an ant unwanted by his colony because of his unsuccessful inventions and clumsy behavior.

The ants harvest food for the grasshoppers and the grasshoppers eat the food; that’s how it’s always been for these insects. The grasshoppers give nothing in return, which is fine with the ants as long as the grasshoppers are satisfied with the given food.

But one desperate day Flick knocks the food pile into an abyss of water. The pesky grasshoppers are furious when there was no food to greet their hungry appetites. The head grasshopper named Hopper (voiced by Kevin Spacey) requests the ants to double their harvest production before the raining season, a time when insects hide out in their homes, surviving on their stored food.

The band of ants become exhausted from the large order they must fill, so Flick has the idea to invite bigger bugs to help them gather food. The worried queen-to-be, Princess Atta (voiced by Juila Louis-Dreyfus), sends Flick to the city immediately for help, hoping he will not return and hurt the colony further. Flick runs into some, what he thinks are warriors. But in reality are recently fired circus bugs in the city. The bugs think it’s an acting job, and that they play warriors, so they pounce on the opportunity.

Flick returns with high hopes, and several "warriors", to start their fight back against the enslaving grasshoppers.

A Bug’s Life is another must see insect movie. Antz was also an earlier fall insect movie, but was darker then A Bug’s Life. With Antz, it was ants against ants; while in A Bug’s Life it’s ants against grasshoppers.

The animation is colorful and bright, looking as if from a photograph of lush landscape. The grasshoppers are disturbingly realistic with their pointy skin and huge menacing eyes. It took Pixar and Disney Productions four years to deliver a Bug’s Life, but it certainly was worth the wait.

So if you’re looking for another insect flick after Antz, scurry down to your local theater for A Bug’s Life.
