you went to the puppy farm,
and picked the best dog ever.
Good!
Now what?

Potty Training

  • Outdoor walking
Start walking your puppy outside so he gets used to do his business outdoors. Buy specially formulated puppy treats and give them to your puppy every time he  goes to the bathroom outside. If and when your puppy goes to the bathroom on the floor, tell him "no". If you didn't see him do it, don't yell, the puppy has probably   already forgotten what he has done.
  • Crate training
Crate training is the best way to make sure your puppy doesn't make a mess of your house while you sleep. Leave the crate door open when your puppy isn't in there at   night or while your out, so he has an option to walk in and like his room. Also, make  sure you line your puppy's crate with towels. Usually he will go to the bathroom in his  crate. I would also suggest that you continue using the crate all the time, even after puppyhood, to make sure your dog doesn't destroy your house while your not looking.

Treat training is one of the best ways to train your puppy and consistent  sessions and repetition is the key to success.

  • Sit
Tell your puppy sit. Obviously he won't respond. Say sit again and push your dog's rear to the floor and put the treat over his nose. Say "good dog!" and give him a  treat. (half a treat if your puppy takes awhile to chew and makes a mess with the crumbs.) Continue using this method and make him sit for longer periods of time.
  • Stay
Staying is a very easy trick. Tell your dog to sit. Put your palm forward and right in front of your dog's eyes and move slowly away, saying stay. Dogs tend to learn   this word loosely in a matter of hours.
  • Come
Always start out with a very long leash. Tell your dog to sit and stay. Give   the leash a gentle tug and say "come". If your dog responds, give him a treat. Walk him  back over to the same spot he was before. Repeat until your dog's training session is over.
  • Lie Down
This trick takes a smidge longer to get perfected. Tell your dog "lie down"  and gently guide his front paws and rear down. Say "stay" and put your palm facing forward in front of his eyes. Give your dog a treat and an immense amount of praise if he  does it. (Also give yourself some praise, lying down is a hard trick to perform.) Repeat as  always and remember to give him the treat.
  • Heel
Keep your dog on a short leash. Pull your dog to your side and say "heel". Say "heel" a couple times during your walk and keep the leash to your side. Say "sit" and "stay" and pet your dog, then keep on walking and saying "heel".
  • Paw
Paw is a fun trick for you and your dog to learn and is a sure fire crowd pleaser at parties. Say "paw" and bring his paw up. Say "good dog". Do not say "good dog" when the paw is on the ground because your dog will think putting his paw down is what  you wanted. Repeat and be careful to always say good dog when the paw is up.

Grooming

  • Bath Time
Don't fill the tub water to high and always use shampoo formulated for   puppies. Human shampoo is too rough and shouldn't be used even on adult dogs. Use a very little amount of shampoo and work up a good lather.
  • Brush Out
Use a soft brush on puppy's fur and be very careful with the slicker brush.   Using too much pressure with a slicker brush can leave scrathes on your puppy's already delicate skin.

I hope you and your puppy do very well and have an everlasting relationship!

How to Choose a Puppy
By Evamarie Spataro
emmablue.jpg (5387 bytes)Picking a puppy is not as easy as you might think. The number one rule is, don’t pick the shy puppy. No matter how sad they look, they create trouble. The shy puppy generally will not want to be with you, and has a chance of getting aggressive at around two years.
