 Sue:
Everyone wants to lose weight and keep it off. Now, Larrian Gillespie doctor to the stars has written The Goddess Diet to
take off the pounds and keep them off.
The Goddess Diet is not a gimmick but a real and successful plan for both healthy eating
and weight loss. Larrian's techniques and ideas work and have helped thousands of
women lose unwanted pounds.
Men & women
are different
Dr. Gillespie extensive research has focused
on how women's bodies use food. In her research she has found that men and women are NOT
alike- their metabolism are completely different.
 Larrian's
other books
The Menopause Diet (see other
interview) and You Don't Have to
Live with Cystitis are also very popular. She has appeared on
numerous television programs and radio shows as a nutritional expert.
Sue:
I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Larrian about her new book The
goddess diet and get the scoop on Cher : ).
As I read your book The Goddess diet it sounds like we all
are goddesses and really need to treat ourselves this way.
What inspired you to write this book?
You've had tremendous success with your other books, notably "The Menopause
Diet." Who were you thinking about when you decided to create The Goddess Diet?

The only problem was physicians and
dieticians hadn't taken into account the differences in female metabolism....
|
Larrian:
The Goddess Diet started out as a lifestyle I designed for myself when I was
perimenopausal and gained over 25 pounds eating what had been medically defined as a
"sensible diet."
The only problem was physicians and dieticians hadn't taken
into account the differences in female metabolism, especially at this time in our lives.
Like everyone else, I had a closet full of clothes that were my "ideal"
size...anything under two digits...but I could only wear oversize T shirts and stretch
pants due to the "Buddha Belly" I had acquired. I told myself for the first 5
years to "accept" myself this way...but the more I researched the impact of
obesity on my health, the less I could rationalize endangering my life when even the loss
of just 10 pounds could make a significant difference in my risk factors for heart
disease, the number killer of women.
As
a urologist and urogynecologist, I had already devised the diet for treating migraines and
a painful bladder condition, interstitial cystitis, which is in my first book "You Don't
Have To Live With Cystitis.( 1986, 1996)" During my 15 years of
practice in seeing over 4,000 women with these problems, I developed a practical
understanding of how important digestion is to our overall health and the impact hormones
have on our ability to extract the nutrients in food and turn them into the right
chemicals in our body.
Studies were ONLY done in men
But when it came to understanding the unique differences in how women digest and
metabolize food, I was appalled to learn that studies were ONLY done in men. Now this may
sound reasonable, but medicine has a way of generalizing results and seeing the female
body as no different than a male's except for the reproductive system ( they even go so
far as to view the female urologic system as just a "cut off" version of the
male. PULEESE!!!) So, after following the suggested "male" ideal for nutrition,
I decided to follow my own instincts and radically alter the amount of protein and
carbohydrates I was eating.
Within 2 months I had lost 15
pounds and the other 10 pounds of fat gradually disappeared over the next four months.
When I realized hormones had to be the reason for the
difference in gender metabolism, I began looking for studies that explained how our
hormones affected digestion. Amazingly, there was a significant amount of research
available on this topic for years, yet no one had synthesized it nor
"popularized" this information so women wouldn't be "digging their graves
with their own teeth" everytime they ate like a man! It was then I realized I needed
to "slay the vampire" myths that were sucking the life out of women by telling
them to eat a high carbohydrate, low protein diet regardless of meal size in order to be
healthy.
The Goddess Diet is really
for any woman at any age,
as it is uniquely designed to fit a woman's hormonal and metabolic needs. Every
woman is and always will be a goddess, for we have the ability to use our intuition to
help us choose foods that will harmonize with our hormones so we can remain slim, ageless
and healthy.
Sue:
The Goddess Diet seems to be better than any other diet because it's more than
about weight loss; it's about making good healthy changes.
How would you counsel a woman about changing her eating habits to become a
Goddess?
Larrian:
If I had to define it in one word it would be variety....vary your choice of
foods, exercise, relaxation, humor...and you will find it easy to remain a goddess no
matter what life throws your way.
Don't be afraid to try a new food....
just this week I discovered baby broccoli, sold as "Aspirations" and
tried different ways to prepare it. Of course, it's always handy to have pets who will
consume any "natural" disasters! Look in the mirror and see the beautiful person
you are for having experienced all you have in life...and keep going. Sing your heart out,
especially in a foreign language, so as not to be accused of forgetting the words. Being a
goddess is being full of life, no matter what your shape or size. If you start with this
mindset, you will find it easy to follow The Goddess Diet plan by allowing your body to
function in harmony with your hormones. Your readers can receive a copy of the latest

Thanks Sue for giving me this opportunity to let more women
know about The Goddess Diet. Like the ripples generated in the water from just one tiny
pebble, I hope the information in my books helps women live long, healthy lives.

the goddess diet
It seems like your worst nightmare.
 After
days of dieting and yes, even starvation, you sneak up on the bathroom scale like a
stealth bomber only to discover you're still not thinner! According to Prevention,
the world's largest health magazine, weight gain is the number one complaint of women. How
food affects hormones is the focus of dietary endocrinology and scientists are only now
starting to assess why women gain and lose weight differently than men.
It's a scientific fact.
Women's stomachs respond differently
than men's when digesting a meal. Numerous studies agrees that we take
almost an hour longer then men to empty our stomachs due to the effect of progesterone on
the mobility of the antrum, or lower portion of the stomach. As a result, we
are much more efficient at grabbing every bit carbohydrate from the foods we eat before we
digest protein and fat. This causes a more sustained rise in insulin, which
increases our ability to store fat. In fact, our blood insulin and glucose levels
can stay high for up to five hours after a 500 to 1000 calorie meal. This can
set the stage for heart disease, hypertension, obesity, cataracts and the signs of aging.
Excerpt: Chapter six
why stress can make you fat
You're waiting for a parking spot in a crowded
shopping mall when a rogue automobile comes tearing down the aisle, swinging right into
your slot. You hit the horn, start screaming and vow to flatten two tires on that
sucker once you find ANOTHER spot! At that very moment you are getting fat!
Stress, especially chronic stress taxes your heart, scrambles your brain and sabotages
your immune system from working like the national guard to protect your body against
infection and cancer. But more importantly, even stressful thoughts can deprive your
tissue of oxygen and the necessary chemicals to keep your hormones in balance.
to fight or flee: that is the question
Just imagine you're a gazelles frolicking on the Serengeti plains of Africa. Life
is good and you don't have a care in the world. That is, until a lion shows
up. Suddenly your heart takes the elevator to the top floor along with your blood
pressure and you pass on being the blue plate special for the day and run like hell.
During those moments, your brain faxed your adrenals to squeeze out cortisol,
norepinephrine and adrenaline and epinephrine to give you the energy for this
life-or-death emergency. Once you are safe, your body "stands down," and
resumes its normal function. Or at least that's how our bodies were designed.
Unfortunately, in our high stress society, we put ourselves through disaster training
several times a day, which triggers these hormones to grab high -octane fat and quick
burning glucose for energy to supply our brain, heart and muscles. And with that
comes the necessity to store more fat. There's no question that cortisol increases fat
deposition in one place, the worst place of all... the belly.
